The University of Stirling was partnered with the London Academy of Diplomacy, an institution led by Joseph Mifsud, the academic who attempted to connect the Trump campaign with Vladimir Putin. More than a mere partner with Stirling, a number of official email addresses for the LAD were hosted on University of Stirling servers, with their main email address listed on official literature as diplomacy stir. Despite this membership, Robin Niblett, veteran director of Chatham House, claims to never have heard of Mifsud. Also, since its closure last year, the London Academy of Diplomacy appears to have disappeared from the internet. Their former website is only available to access via the online archive service Wayback Machine and any remaining social media profiles have not been updated for years. Mifsud is a regular contributor to the Russian think-tank, having published a number of journal entries with them on Russian international relations under the LAD banner.

On paper, Joseph Mifsud — who has emerged as a central figure in the criminal investigation into possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign — looks like a seasoned professional in diplomacy and academia. Evidence has also emerged that suggests Mifsud has a relationship with at least one senior Russian official in London. On Tuesday, he acknowledged to the Daily Telegraph that he was the man described in the papers , but denied any wrongdoing, or knowledge of the Clinton emails. The court documents paint him as a stealthy operator with links deep inside the Kremlin. Mifsud told the Telegraph that this allegation was untrue. The caption says the two discussed an academic summit in Moscow that Mifsud had attended and British-Russia relations. Attempts by the Guardian to reach Mifsud on a London mobile phone and in Rome were not successful.

While Mr Mifsud appears to have extensive ties to several important institutions in Russia, the Maltese native's academic credentials in Britain are far hazier. He holds a professorial teaching position in the politics department at the University of Stirling in Scotland, according to officials there who said he took up the post in May. However, he is not named on the university's list of experts and the university press office refused to say how often he is on campus, where a reporter on the student newspaper said he does not maintain an office. We haven't been able to find a single student who has met with Professor Mifsud or attended any lectures by him at Stirling. I've never heard of him," said Robin Niblett, the veteran director of Chatham House, the prominent London think tank. Nor has Mr Niblett heard of the now-defunct London Academy of Diplomacy, where Mr Mifsud is said to have served as "honorary director" before it closed according to his biography. He has also not heard of the London Centre of International Law Practice, where Mr Mifsud is listed as director of international strategic development.

Why has Britain given such a warm welcome to this shadowy professor?
