What do movie ratings mean, and who applies them?
Are Rated-R Movies Really That Terrible For Kids?come del 2017
While the show is often funny and light, it retains dark and somber moments as well. Whether or not this one is suitable for children comes down to factors outside of the normal considerations: sex, nudity, crude language, etc. The action sequences are not gory, albeit there is a torture scene or two that some may find a bit unsettling. Romance plots are PG at best, and focus on the emotions and reactions to physical intimacy, as opposed to the act itself. Though evading all the facets that lead to an immediate R-rating, there are aspects to be aware of before watching this one with the kids.
The current rating system we use was created in response to a previous self-censorship system that was created in , known as the Hays Code, when the MPAA was founded and led by William Hays. The current rating system we have in the United States is voluntary and requires a fee for having material go through the rating process. During the rating process, the rating board considers things like language, sex, violence, drug use and other situations that might concern most parents. The ratings board tries to reflect what they think the majority of other parents would give the film in ratings. Ratings are not designed to indicate that films are appropriate or inappropriate, they are simply a way of saying what kind of content is included in the movie to give parents a chance to make informed decisions on what they are allowing their children to watch.

Because it's a musical rather than a biopic, Rocketman freely plays with some of the details and the timeline of Elton John's life. As director Dexter Fletcher told me , this movie was about exploring John's "inner, emotional life. So Rocketman does not shy away from the sex and drugs of John's life. As director Dexter Fletcher tells me, they set out from the very beginning to make an R-rated musical. Generally, the Motion Picture Association of America, which gives movies their ratings, considers a film R-rated when there's sexually-oriented nudity and drug abuse, among other considerations. He's a big boy, and if you want, you know, to question him about the facts of his life and what he did and didn't do, he's here to defend himself. Other people are not, and so they are protected by people who loved them, or want to tell a different story.

The movie rating system used in the United States was created in , as a replacement to the Hays Production Code. The Hays Production Code simply gave the Production Code Administration's approval or disapproval of a movie, without any gradation to describe the movie's content. The rating system originally consisted of four ratings and now includes five. The body that assigns these ratings is the Rating Board, located in Los Angeles. The Rating Board consists of eight to 13 full-time members and is part of the Classification and Rating Administration. Board members come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all have some parenting experience so they can look at movies with a parent's perspective. Members of the board view each film submitted for a rating, estimate the appropriate rating individually, discuss their thoughts as a group and vote on what rating the film should receive.
Common Sense Media's unbiased ratings are created by expert reviewers and aren't influenced by the product's creators or by any of our funders, affiliates.
