In the same way that even the most hapless handyman could improve on a room previously decorated by the simple expedient of dropping a live hand grenade into an open tin of paint and retiring to a safe distance, you would justifiably expect this second-generation Mini Countryman to represent a considerable improvement over its predecessor. Because with a special mention reserved for the cabin's ill-considered central accessories spine, complete with Christmas cracker contents-quality plug-in stuff you really didn't want that first effort was something of a dog in every department. But Mini admits that, size wise, said predecessor somewhat crouched between segments, so this one is bigger in every department. It's taller, wider and mm longer.
Technical highlights. Around 15 per cent of buyers will go awd. With it fitted, the Countryman is a brisk car, a combination of mid-range torque and top-end power meaning safe and easy overtaking. The Sport button provides less of a transformation than in the hatch, but is necessary for some proper steering weight and a keener throttle. The downside? Unsubtle pops and bangs from the exhaust on even the smallest of throttle lifts. A novelty for two minutes, a pain for any length of time after.
Mini has to toe a difficult line in order to maintain its brand identity. Its cars must be stylish, relatively small, and most importantly, fun to drive. Meeting all those criteria isn't that hard to do on a compact hatchback, but a Mini crossover needs to strike a delicate balance of smallness and utility while maintaining that playful personality Mini is known for.
