Mumbai Indians held their nerve to successfully defend a modest and claim their third Indian Premier League crown with a one-run win over Rising Pune Supergiant, in a final-ball thriller at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad. Rohit Sharma's side, beaten three times earlier in the tournament by Supergiant, won the match that mattered as Australian seamer Mitchell Johnson successfully defended 11 off the last over, taking the key wicket of compatriot Steve Smith 51 off 50 balls in the process. Fellow seamers Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah also played their part, bowling economically at the death as Supergiant failed to score the 30 needed off 18 balls to claim their maiden crown in what could be the franchise's last match. Supergiant, along with Gujarat Lions, was awarded a two-year IPL run after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for the same period due to their involvement in the spot-fixing controversy. But with those two years now up - and with no extension currently likely - Supergiant's future remains shrouded in doubt despite participating in a nerve-shredding finale to the competition.
