The Department of Computer Science was founded in and is housed in the Regent Court building on Portobello Street, completed in The Department is a member of the Faculty of Engineering. About new undergraduate students join the Department each year. George's church which has been converted into a modern lecture theatre. Regent Court is a pleasant purpose-built building, completed in , and built around a grass courtyard. We also have a new dedicated computer laboratory in Edgar Allen House, a short walk from the Regent Court. Lecture theatres are situated nearby on the campus.

It became the University of Sheffield just 10 years later and founded on the penny donations of Sheffield factory workers who hoped a university would benefit their children, health and local economy. Today the university teaches 25, students, including around 3, international students from countries, and employs approximately 6, staff. Its academic departments are divided into six faculties: arts and humanities, engineering, medicine, dentistry and health, science, social sciences, and international faculty, city college, Thessaloniki, Greece. Its motto translates as "To discover the causes of things". Outside of the university itself, which ranks among the top in the UK for student experience, students at Sheffield can enjoy a thriving, cultural city with a reputation for being inexpensive.

It received its royal charter in as successor to the University College of Sheffield , [7] which was established in by the merger of Sheffield Medical School founded in , Firth College and Sheffield Technical School Sheffield is a multi-campus university predominantly over two campus areas: the Western Bank and the St George's. It is one of the original red brick universities , a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, the Worldwide Universities Network , the N8 Group of the eight most research intensive universities in Northern England and the White Rose University Consortium. There are eight Nobel laureates affiliated with Sheffield and six of them are the alumni or former long-term staff of the university. The University of Sheffield was originally formed by the merger of three colleges. The Sheffield School of Medicine was founded in , followed in [18] by the opening of Firth College, which developed out of the Cambridge University Extension Movement scheme, by Mark Firth , a steel manufacturer, to teach arts and science subjects.
