This was more subversive than it sounds: at the time, the only officially approved style of composition for a classically-trained music student was post-Webernian serialism, which never appealed to me much, and writing Christmas carols was an undercover way of slipping a tune or two into circulation at a time of year when music critics are generally on vacation. One of his contemporaries there, John Tavener, also became a star of choral repertoire. But it was as an undergraduate in the s that the course of his life was fixed. 1. No living composer is more closely associated with the Christmas season than John Rutter , whose piece Shepherd's Pipe Carol, first placed him on the map of Yule some 35 or so Christmases ago.
