It was their third title in eight years in the competition. It was the first instance of the UEFA Cup final being a one-game contest at a neutral stadium, having previously being decided over two legs with each team having one home game. The access list was finally decreased to clubs, because only the 16 best national champions excluded from the Champions League group stage entered in the UEFA Cup. Spartak Moscow won 1—6 on aggregate. The original 2nd leg game finished 2—2 scorers: Shirko , Alenichev — Lota 2x on 30 September Report , but had to be replayed because the goal posts were 8 cm short of the prescribed height. The draw for the third round was held on 7 November

The tournament was won 1—0 by Real Madrid , winning for the first time in 32 years , beating Juventus who were playing in a third consecutive final. It started a run of three victories in five seasons for the Spanish club. This season was the first to have six groups, as opposed to four in the previous tournament, which meant that only two group runners-up qualified for the quarter finals as opposed to all the second-placed teams. It was also the first to have two qualifying rounds instead of just one. The runners-up entered the second qualifying round, while the league winners entered directly the group stage except for Turkey where both winner and runner-up entered the second qualifying round. Borussia Dortmund , the defending champions, were eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid.

  1. Following the destruction of the French side two weeks prior, Juve had played two matches in Serie A, winning against Lazio and Piacenza, and not conceding a single goal in the process while still keeping their noses in front of Inter in the title race by a solidary point.
