Every now and then, we my band have these little fights or arguments over who is better; Gilmour or Waters. Still, very early on we decided that we were only to perform songs from the original era.. Now, I know a lot of you are Waters fans. Probably as much as you like Gilmour, but get me right. But, I get embarassed when I listen to his own versions of the Floyd classics.
Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London in They emerged from London's underground music scene during the late s, and became one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in popular music history. Gaining a following as a psychedelic band, they were distinguished for their extended compositions , sonic experimentation, philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows , and became a leading band of the progressive rock genre. Pink Floyd were founded by students Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. Under Barrett's leadership, they released two charting singles and a successful debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour joined in December ; Barrett left in April due to deteriorating mental health.
He joined the group as guitarist and co-lead vocalist in shortly before the departure of founding member Syd Barrett. He is also credited for bringing songwriter Kate Bush to public attention. He was awarded with the Outstanding Contribution title at the Q Awards. Gilmour has taken part in projects related to issues including animal rights , environmentalism, homelessness, poverty, and human rights. He has married twice and is the father of eight children. Gilmour's parents encouraged him to pursue his interest in music, and in he bought his first single, Bill Haley 's " Rock Around the Clock ". He borrowed a guitar from a neighbour, but never gave it back.
Despite the delicate acoustic strumming of the demo, Gilmour wanted the Floyd version of the song to have a harder edge. Waters, on the other hand, wanted a big, theatrical sound. As Waters remembers it in an interview with Absolute Radio at the top, the disagreement boiled down to a rhythm track, and the negotiation involved taking pieces of the verse and chorus from two different versions and piecing them together. Dave on one side; Roger and I on the other. If you can think of such a thing happening before or since, in any art form, I'd love to hear about it. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason is happy to be performing his iconic band's music in concert again with his Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets project. He says the only thing better than playing with his new band would be reuniting with his own band. Mason remains on good terms with both of his surviving Pink Floyd band mates Roger Waters and David Gilmour , although the pair has a famously fraught relationship. The drummer explains that Waters and Gilmour are "happier doing their own things and not working together. Last December, Mason attempted to clarify the frostiness between Waters and Gilmour in an interview with Rolling Stone.
